What is an SSD and is a Refurbished SSD worth it?

SSDs work by storing data by trapping electrical charges, then reading their electrical state, meaning data can be retrieved almost instantaneously. As there are no moving parts, like there is in an HDD, refurbished SSDs are nearly identical to their brand-new counterparts. The only difference is that they can often be a fraction of the cost.

SSDs come in various types: SATA, SAS and NVMe. All versions use NAND flash memory chips and are fast at transferring data. No matter which version of SSD you’re looking at, all help store and retrieve data for your server, giving you dependable performance.

As SSDs are solid in state, with no moving components, that means there are fewer parts for wear and tear over time. If well-maintained, an SSD can last a long time. That means the cost-effectiveness of refurbished SSDs are not just because they are refurbished, but because they don’t need to be replaced for a significant period.

Frequently Asked Questions

The interface type determines how an SSD connects to and communicates with your server, and it has a significant impact on speed and cost. SATA is the slowest but cheapest of the three, SAS provides better performance and enterprise-grade reliability, and NVMe delivers the highest speeds by connecting directly via the PCIe bus, which provides multiple lanes for data transmission. Typically, enterprise SATA SSDs deliver a practical read / write bandwidth of around 550MB/s and 85,000 read IOPS, enterprise SAS SSDs deliver approximately double the bandwidth and 2.5 times the IOPS, whilst enterprise NVMe SSDs deliver over 12 times more read bandwidth than SATA and more than 16 times the IOPS. As a rule of thumb, SATA is best when budget and capacity are the priority, SAS for balanced enterprise use with reliability, and NVMe when performance is paramount.

Hard Disk Drives, or HDDs, have a magnetic spinning disk and a high-speed arm to load and save data. HDD's typically come in larger capacities than SSD's.

Solid State Drives, or SSDs, use flash storage controlled by electronic transistors, meaning they are much faster overall and can save data very quickly. Their speed makes them better for more intensive tasks and accessing data very quickly.

Yes, in most server environments the performance gap is substantial. SSDs offer data transfer rates between 500–3,500+ MB/s, leaving HDDs (which typically manage 30–150 MB/s) far behind, which is largely because SSDs have no moving parts. SSDs also use less CPU and memory even when handling demanding tasks, making them ideal for eCommerce platforms and database-heavy applications. However, HDDs still have a significant role to play. A common and cost-effective approach is a tiered storage architecture, which uses SSDs for frequently accessed ‘hot’ data such as operating systems, active databases, and applications, all whilst keeping HDDs for log files, archives, and backups where capacity matters more than speed.

There are three main things you’ll need to verify: interface type (SATA, SAS, or NVMe), form factor, and drive capacity. Interface type is critical, as a SAS backplane can accept both SAS and SATA drives of the same form factor however NVMe almost always require a different backplane. Form factor is also important: most server SSDs come in 2.5-inch (SFF) format, though M.2 and U.2 are common for NVMe. If your server handles a lot of read/write operations or requires high-speed data access (such as for databases, virtual machines, or frequently accessed applications), an SSD will provide a clear performance improvement; if the server primarily serves as a storage medium with less frequent access, the choice of interface and capacity matters more than raw speed. If you're unsure, the ITinStock team is happy to help you match the right drive to your specific server model.

Of course! Our SSDs have often come from data centres, where enterprise-grade drives using SLC, MLC or TLC NAND flash are chosen for their high endurance and durability, and these are maintained even after refurbishment. That’s because our disks have undergone comprehensive diagnostic testing, surface scanning, and functional validation before being resold. This testing, which takes place in our secure data facility, eliminates issues and gives you a more reliable product than an untested ‘used’ drive would provide. As our SSDs also come with our 3-year warranty support, our team will be happy to help should anything occur to your SSD within its warranty period.
